RHD students - application, due diligence, selection,
enrolment and candidature processes

PGAO – Postgraduate Administrative Officer
PGC – Postgraduate Coordinator
PA – Principal advisor
D – Centre Director
BM – Centre Business Manager/Finance Officer
AO – Centre Administrative Officer
SMI – internal planning, marketing and advertising:
- define areas of technical need and number of postgraduate candidates required in SMI Centres (D, PA, BM)
- provide details of research areas and projects on SMI/Centre web sites (BM, AO)
- confirm number of positions available, project/scholarship funds are available
(BM and others)
- advertise – eg SMI/Centre web site, UQ SEEK, JASON, other web sites, newspapers etc (PGAO and others)
SMI RHD applicants - selection and due diligence process:
- student enquiry
- PGAO requests specific information from the applicant ie Expression of interest - UQ form http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/downloads/rhd/expression-of-interest.doc detailed CV, academic record, English qualifications, written material to confirm research potential ie undergraduate and/or Masters theses, publications, non-confidential company reports
- Send application material to appropriate SMI Centre/research staff member (PGAO)
- Assessment of applicants academic qualifications, professional experience and research potential (PGC, PGAO, PA)
- preliminary assessment of English speaking and writing capabilities for applicants who do not have English as a first language (PGAO, PGC)
- match candidates abilities and experience with the defined areas of technical need and specific SMI opportunities/vacancies (PGC, PGAO, PA)
- re-confirm position availability and that project/scholarship funds are available (BM, PA)
- PGAO asks student to apply for admission to candidature and offer SMI scholarship if appropriate (which is subject to successful enrolment at UQ) OR ask student to apply for a UQ scholarship (which is subject to successful enrolment at UQ)
- SMI offer letter
- IP agreement
- SMI policy on fees, scholarship, benefits and SMI degree completion expectations
SMI RHD candidate enrolment - Graduate School, UQ International Education Directorate (IED), SMI research staff and SMI RHD unit:
o write a research proposal for/with the candidate
o propose a suitable supervisory team
o apply for scholarship support
· academic equivalence assessment review of international qualifications and comparison with Australian Qualifications (PGC, PGAO)
· English qualifications (TOEFL and IELTS) for international candidates - UQ IED assessment of applicants
· SMI final sign off on funding (D, PA, PGAO, PGC, BM/FO)
· research offer of admission and scholarship by Graduate School; or for international candidates by UQ IED ( can be a conditional offer eg must pass English – IELTS, certified copies of awards and transcripts)
· acceptance of the offer and scholarship; international candidates pay various fees at this stage of application
· research acceptance, international candidates - IED sends the candidate an eCOE (confirmation of enrolment) – UQ IED to candidate
· international candidates - visa application – by the candidate (this can take between 2 weeks and 6 months depending on the candidates country of origin)
