SMI focuses on its engagement as the vehicle for successful design and delivery of knowledge- based solutions to the sustainability challenges of the global resources industry.
SMI’s proven model of engagement with both industry and non-industry stakeholders is at the heart of our success. SMI will work to enhance that engagement further to build effective, beneficial and long term relationships with our stakeholders around the world.
Our Engagement aim is to ensure that we maintain our global leadership in resources industry research and education. The hallmark of this leadership is multi-disciplinary design and delivery via continuous engagement with community, government and industry.

  • Strategic Advisory Board consisting of government, university and industry senior executives;
  • Disciplinary Advisory Boards for each of SMI’s six Centres;
  • Ongoing development of industry networks ;
  • Regular presence at operating mines;
  • Involvement of industry staff in projects;
  • Participation in industry and government policy, strategy, advisory and planning bodies;
  • Students focused on industry topics and projects;
  • Adaptable and continuing professional development programs ;
  • Recognition and reward for engagement excellence in our people, as evidenced by establishment of a Chair of Minerals Industry Engagement;
  • Subject-based research planning dialogues and roundtables with industry;
  • Facilitation of industry issues and management forums;
  • Collaboration across UQ and with national and international leading academic organisations;
  • Secondments to and from industry;
  • Researchers embedded in industry; industry people co-located at SMI; and
  • Direct commercial interface –JKtech -for technology and knowledge deployment.
  • SMI’s engagement delivery includes its linkages with the resources sector throughout the world which draws upon a wide expertise base within the Institute and across UQ. SMI’s international collaborations link us with other Australian universities and CSIRO, as well as international universities and research groups in the USA, Turkey, Canada, Chile, South Africa, Germany, the UK, Sweden and China.
    SMI research expertise embraces industry’s needs and delivers strategic, operational and policy outcomes in and across:

    • Mining and geology;
    • Mineral processing;
    • Environment, mine site rehabilitation and closure;
    • Water and energy;
    • Risk, safety and health;
    • Social responsibility; and
    • Community relations.
