Tribes and Technology: What are the limits of technology INNOVATION in achieving economic GROWTH?
In early October SMI held a knowledge leadership event where leading experts from the Sustainable Minerals Institute explored the limits of technology, and why companies must look beyond geology to ecology if they are to find true economic success. In these times where industry is again downsizing in response to external changes, SMI is an expert at putting forward ideas that challenge the thinking that radical cyclical responses are inevitable.
Guest speakers:
Prof Saleem Ali, Director, Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM)
Prof Wayne Stange, Director, Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC)

Date: July 18th, 2012
Time: 2:30pm - 4:30pm
Location: Level 4 Seminar Room, Sir James Foots Building (47A), Sustainable Minerals Institute, The University of Queensland.
Lyuba Zarsky (Monterey Institute of International Studies) and Dr Chris Anderson (Rio Tinto) will spend an afternoon at CSRM talking about sustainable development challenges in the extractive industries.
The Marlin gold and silver mine in the highlands of Guatemala has generated intense international controversy on human rights grounds. Lyuba will present on the topic: "Can extractive industries promote sustainable development? A net benefits framework and a case study of the Marlin mine in Guatemala". Lyuba is Associate Professor, MBA and International Environmental Policy Programs, Monterey Institute of International Studies, Monterey, California.
Dr Chris Anderson will follow Lyuba’s presentation and engage the topic from an industry perspective. Chris is the Rio Tinto strategy leader and corporate functional lead for Communities in the Americas, with a particular focus on Indigenous communities.
