Each of the SMI Centres offers Masters and PhD research projects in their specialisations. The first PhD associated with the forerunner of the JKMRC was awarded in 1964 and since then approaching 250 degrees have been awarded to postgraduates who have studied within the SMI Centres.
A very strong feature of the postgraduate programme over the years has been its international nature. Over 20 countries are represented in the list of graduates.
A second feature is the strong industry engagement which is associated with almost all postgraduate research projects. Students gain excellent exposure to the industry and become very familiar with the challenges of conducting research in an industrial environment and in the challenges of transferring research outcomes to the industry. One outcome of this exposure is that over 80% of graduates have been directly employed within the minerals industry after completing their degrees.
