 Project Management

The complexity of project management is best demonstrated by reference to the Mass Mining Technology Project which has the following characteristics:

• 12 company sponsors form Australia, Canada, Chile, South Africa, Sweden, Finland and England
• Four research participants (SMI, Itasca, University of Toronto, Lulea University, IM2) and two consultants
• Income of $US1.3 million per year)
• Four main project themes and 21 separate projects, each with an individual budget, KPIs and reporting requirements
• Week long project review meetings (technical progress and financial reporting) twice a year, usually held at international locations

SMI provides the project management for Mass Mining Technology as follows:

• Technical and research direction and co-ordination is the responsibility of Dr Gideon Chitombo, Manager of Mass Mining projects in SMI
• Financial control and reporting is provided by Mrs Cathie Mortimer, SMI Business Manager
• Project oversight is provided by Professor Don McKee, Director of SMI

The complexity of the Mass Mining Technology project requires a skilled team. SMI has proven capability in effective project management.
