 SMI's Research in Sustainable Development

SMI’s approach is to work with the minerals industry to understand and implement the principles of Sustainable Development. SMI and its Centres do this by conducting research projects across a wide range of topics. The nature of SMI, consisting of a broad spectrum of SD related expertise in the Centres, lends itself to this approach.

The leadership provided by the industry associations, notably the work of ICMM and the Minerals Council of Australia, has been particularly helpful to SMI.

One means of presenting the diversity of research undertaken by SMI is to relate the activities to the ICMM principles. The SMI work fits within themes and within these themes are real projects. The SMI themes and examples of actual projects are mapped against the ICMM principles below. It is apparent that SMI now has experience which is directly relevant to each of the 10 ICMM principles.
