 The Role of ACMER

The Australian Centre for Minerals Extension and Research operated for many years as a leading independent provider of research and training programmes in the broad area of mining environmental issues. ACMER acted as a research broker in identifying environmental research needs, developing collaborative research projects which drew upon relevant research groups and in project managing funded projects. ACMER had a commendable reputation for its workshop and short course training programmes in the environmental area. ACMER had also developed a longstanding association with a number of Commonwealth Government Departments in the preparation of best practice handbooks and the organisation of workshops for Government.

In mid 2006 the Board of ACMER decided to cease the operation of the company. SMI agreed to acquire the workshop and short course training activity of ACMER as a going concern and to employ the ACMER staff who administer that activity. SMI also agreed to provide project management of the existing ACMER research projects with this task being undertaken by CMLR. SMI will not be developing new research projects under the ACMER name.

From October 2006 ACMER became a unit within SMI. ACMER’s objective is to maintain and build the successful workshop and short course programme in the environmental area, maintain the excellent Government relationships and look for further opportunities in the training area.
