Peter has a PhD on the nutritional ecology of contrasting Australian ecosystems from the University of Queensland, Australia. Since completion of his PhD in 1997, Peter has worked with non-government organisations as an environmental consultant and within the University system. Peter has conducted research in a variety of ecosystems in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Vietnam and Zambia. Peter has trained students from a range of countries, and over the last two decades he has also worked on forest landscape restoration and mine rehabilitation. Peter works closely with research organisations, mining companies and government agencies to solve a range of issues on land restoration and the environmental impacts of mining.
Peter has a broad range of interests and stemming from recent research on biodiversity and rehabilitation, his research has been moulded by issues that have emerged. These include:
- monitoring techniques to detect environmental change;
- utilising Unmanned Aerial Systems to address issues of scale and confidence;
- phytomining and screening for hyperaccumulator plants; and
- the roles of different stakeholders when measuring rehabilitation success.
Peter works on a range of projects designing monitoring programs, rehabilitation strategies and completion criteria for restoration work.
