CWiMI groups its research within six broad themes:

• Water balances in mining operations
• Water reuse
• Frugal water use
• Post closure management of sites
• Understanding the full costs and value of water
• Development of techniques for the effective capture and sharing of knowledge

Water is common to almost every aspect of mining and processing operations so it has naturally followed that much of the research of CWiMI is conducted in collaborative projects involving CSRM, CMLR and the JKMRC. CWiMI is also at the forefront of sustainable development research within SMI, much in association with CSRM.
